After a long period of time, my baby, semangat45, has been reborn after its long sleep due to the harddisk lost. It can't be helped, I was using a borrowed one. Horay, my IBM xServer runs debian SID with Xen and Vserver enabled kernel. It runs good and the hardware problems never arise again, hopefully ever. I have one Xen guest running a MySQL server now and another one running WordpressMU. It's set now, download some themes, done! Now, the problem is: How to aggregate? OK, now I'm away from Xen or any virtualization. I have a training starting from monday in Hotel Binakarsa. The training is about smartcard and held by Finnet Indonesia (a child from Telkom). Based on this article , I have managed to make Xen works like a charm. I use Debian Etch. I installed it from netinst. I just pick standart installation with no desktop or any server. Then, I install: # apt-get install xorg # apt-get install openbox openbox-theme obconf pypanel The last three is optional, but it doesn't hurt if I have one. I use pypanel as taskbar because it's lightweight. We only can try para-virtualizaton because of hardware limitation We have tried Xen on these platform: -> Debian Sarge -> Debian Etch -> Ubuntu Dapper -> Ubuntu Edgy -> Fedora Core 6 -> OpenSUSE 10.1 -> Xen Demo CD The most distro I find amusing is OpenSUSE. It has Xen capable YaST so we can manage the Xen from YaST. The downside of this distro is the installation time take long time compared others. Fedora Core 6 (FC6) has a nice graphical boot. It has Xen by default, but the downside is we cannot install another distro. It has it's own tool. The best distro goes to Xen Demo CD. But, it can't be installed into harddrive. It needs some tweaks. :)) Sarge and Dapper use source install. Etch and Edgy have their built kernel but no graphical tools. You have to download and use XenMan. It is great I think. I had enough with XEN! My cpu doesn't have latest VMX instructions, or maybe not activated? My IBM xSeries 225 is to precious to dump. In quest of virtualization, I found this vmware server and I'm running it right now with three guests: WinXP SP2, Debian Sarge, Ubuntu. Infact, I'm typing this from one of my machine. I'm trying to run KQemu. But, if time permits and I'm not lazy enough to try the stuff.

OK, the culprit of why I'm not able to sleep is: DIFFERENT MEMORY VENDOR! Yes, that's the cause of instability of my cute box. With desperado heart, I'm switching my filesystem from reiserfs to ext3. This consideration is because the OpenSUSE 10.2 make the switch too. Maybe, the filesystem is unstable for this kind of use. But, worst than reiserfs, ext3 failed after few seconds in compiling kernel section. In state of hopeless feeling, I install xubuntu-desktop, reboot, and suddenly I realize that I'm making a mistake. What the heck X for? This is a server machine, not a desktop! In state of idiocy, I log into the system, run a terminal and execute top, run a screensaver. Then, a magic happens. The compiler starts working great. It have no more illness. It doesn't have errors anymore. It compiles smoothly. Yay...! Yippeeee...! So, I have an explanation regarding the problem: The machine is too good to be left alone with a big resource hog process. When I check in the internet, I find many cpus have Fake SCSI causing GNU/Linux systems to fail. Is it the cause? No way, Jose! My box is ain't that cheap! My box, IBM xSeries 225, is build with *REAL* SCSI Controller on PCI Express. Hmm... is it because Dapper uses GCC 4? Many source code tend to break when compiled because of the strict rules of GCC 4. So, I try to compromise using GCC 3.3 (I think 3.4 should be fine, but it's already done so I stick with GCC 3.3). # export MAKEFLAGS="CC=gcc-3.3" And I modify the cflags for optimation: # export CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -msse2" OK, the compile seems fine. OK, after I wrestled with this device, I finally admit that this is an AWESOME device. This device supports GNU/Linux and it has the driver open. Btw, Sangoma AFT A104 is a WAN card. Based on the setup, A104 can use T1 or E1. If I'm not mistaking, it support HDLC and encapsulation PPP (oe and atm). In my place, the AFT cards are used for communicating via teleconference. My affair with the card is to connecting one node to another node (back-to-back) connection. Well, after 1 week of struggling, I've found that the cable must be cross over. DOH! So, it ran smoothly now. How to get it run? Just download the driver and prepare the source code of the running kernel. Yes, the AFT's driver installation is too dumb to use the available kernel headers. So, in order to install the driver and utility, you must have the source code compiled. Yeah, that is the title of the ceremony. It was held in last saturday. It was held by all (most?) Pentacostal churches including my church. I was an usher. Because of the increasing use of Ubuntu in the campuss, I will shed a light to have your Ubuntu shining. This is the ultimate installation noob's guide. Preparation For you folks whom want Ubuntu only OS, there is no preparation necessary except to get your installer CD/DVD. For those that already have an OS such as Windoze, you must prepare a good partition. Normally, 5 Gigs (Gigabytes) is enough. But, for ultimate fun, I recommend 10 Gigs spares for the linux partition. [NOTE: Partition is like dividing your harddrive into pieces of drive, just remember apple pie.] Installing Ubuntu Base System I assume we are using Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake). Boot from CD: Turn on your computer and put the installation CD into the CD/DVD drive and select to boot from CD/DVD drive (often by pressing button). Just press to boot from the CD/DVD. My church just finished their Grand Meeting (Musyawarah Besar/Mubes). It ended with a ... Ah males gw latihan bahasa Inggris. Tadi pagi ngadain ibadah raya dengan gw sebagai Keyboardist. Ibadah tadi pagi itu selain dihadiri oleh Gembala Sidang, Pendeta, dan pelayan lainnya dari seluruh Indonesia, dihadiri pula oleh gereja cabang dari Jabodetabek. Fyi, gereja gw, walaupun kecil dan terkesan seperti rumah, adalah gereja pusat yang punya cabang cukup banyak dari Sumatera Utara hingga ke Papua dan Irian Barat (gw gag tau mana yang paling barat...). Anyway, gw cukup terkejut dengan animo yang ada ketika pujian dilagukan. Betapa semangat jemaat membuat gw berapi-api. Man, it was ages ago when I've got this feeling. Sungguh, kebaktian tadi beda banget. Gw ngerasa banget sukacita dan kekuatan spiritualnya.
