Selama ini dunia pendidikan tinggi tidak pernah diuntungkan dari perangkat lunak berlisensi tertutup. Selama ini dunia pendidikan tinggi di Indonesia telah mengajarkan kejahatan kepada mahasiswanya. Pendidikan tinggi di Indonesia telah secara nyata pelanggaran hukum terhadap penggunaan perangkat lunak berlisensi tertutup. Lebih lagi, dunia pendidikan tinggi mengajarkan ketidakpedulian mereka terhadap ekonomi bangsa yang tidak mampu menjangkau perangkat lunak berlisensi tertutup.

Mengapa pendidikan tinggi tidak berani mengambil inisiatif untuk mengembangkan perangkat lunak bebas secara penuh seperti seluruh dunia?

Coba tanya, berapa banyak mahasiswa Indonesia yang pernah mengenal LATeX? LATeX yang secara defacto telah menjadi standar dalam penulisan karya ilmiah. Apakah kita hanya tahu cara mengutip tanpa menyebutkan sumber? (plagiarisme)

Tanyakanlah kepada mahasiswa ilmu komputer, aplikasi apakah yang mengizinkan mereka untuk berinovasi?

Tentunya bukan perangkat lunak berlisensi tertutup, melainkan perangkat lunak berlisensi bebas. Lisensi yang paling utama yang sering digunakan adalah GPL, yang bisa berarti GNU Public License atau pun Glodok Punya License alias bajakan.

Duh, akhir-akhir ini para pengguna perangkat lunak bebas di kampusku semakin berkurang. Apakah mereka sudah sebagai pengguna bukan sebagai pengembang?

Aduh, capai sekali. Apakah ada buktinya kalau penggunaan perangkat lunak sepert M*DN mendatangkan inovasi, ataukah hanya mendatangkan kegampangan dalam menggunakan (ease of use)?

On 16th June, Mark Shuttleworth, the man behind Canonical and Ubuntu GNU/Linux, made a big post: "No Negotiations with Microsoft in Progress"

The post is about he refuses the Microsoft agreement to not sue anyone from any unknown patent infringement. The state is clear, he doesn't agree for signing against anything that unknown. Which is then the deal cannot be justified clearly.

Why Mark dares to take the challenge?

Reason #1
It would be troublesome for Microsoft if they put patent infringement against Cannonical. If Microsoft ever wins, then most likely Ubuntu and any GNU/Linux systems would be banned from US, but not the rest of the world, e.g. EU.

How could this happen?

The FOSS people like FSF most likely will bundle their important projects with many patents so that any of their works and derivatives would become useless to any company in the US. This would lock US companies to proprietary alternatives and the IT costs would climb up. Something like good old revenge would destroy US itself.

Reason #2
Today's GNU/Linux usage have varied from Mainframes into any exotic handhelds e.g. PSP. This would beneficially benefits countries which embrace GNU/Linux. Their emerging industry would create customs gadgets and with lower cost which eventually making them market players. Except if Microsoft could buy the government.

Reason #3
Ubuntu #1 bug and the comitment of Canonical towards their ultimate products: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Kubuntu. Betraying their comitment would likely be a doom ticket. This is because if we think about the free softwares, we would think about zealots, hackers, and commoners that contribute significantly in the product. Crossing any of their beliefs would suffer in total losses of man power which eventually will degrade their software which end up as death penalty.

Well, there are many reasons, but the three would be sufficient enough.

Aplikasi yang berhenti akibat kekurangan memori atau pun loncatan-loncatan listrik yang tak terduga yang membuat nilai bit pada suatu register berubah walaupun sudah lulus uji kelaikan.

Perasaan adalah motor penggerak manusia dan merupakan bentuk pemikiran yang sengaja didesain manusia sebagai fungsi acak untuk menghasilkan nilai yang maksimal dan algoritma yang efisien. Perasaan adalah suatu suatu fungsi panggil-kembali yang berisi nilai eliptik. Terkadang menghasilkan tipe data void yang ternyata merupakan data dari suatu obyek yang telah kehilangan isinya akibat pengembalian referensi yang telah dijadikan data umum.

Apakah arti dari semua ini? Ketika semua dipertanyakan artinya, artinya sudah tak lagi menjadi kenikmatan. Semua adalah dusta dan semua adalah bentuk dari kemunafikan. Tetapi, mengapa terkadang terasa nyata? Mengapa semua orang berdusta dan merasa bahwa kenangan adalah nyata?

Apakah kenyataan? Benarkah sekarang adalah nyata? Mengapa masa lalu adalah kenangan yang terasa? Mengapa saat ini tak kurasakan? Luka ini, benarkah sudah sembuh? Tak terlihat darah yang mengalir, tak kulihat ada yang membusuk.

Benarkah selasar hati adalah pintu bagi jiwa untuk terbuka? Ataukah saujana yang singgah hanyalah meninggalkan debu-debu yang berisi kuman-kuman berisi infeksi. Ataukah aku sendiri yang menginginkannya, mengundang dan membawanya masuk dengan senang hati.

Apakah kejujuran? Sedangkan sesuatu yang tak dapat diilustrasikan berusaha digambarkan dengan kaidah dan temanya? Apakah anasir-anasir dari pikiran adalah merupakan sesuatu yang dapat dibohongi? Apakah memang apa yang kupikirkan saat ini adalah suatu setan yang merasuki dan merancangkan kelaknatan dan menghempaskan jiwa.

Pencobaan adalah senjata terakhir untuk membela hati yang rapuh. Hati yang asa dan raganya telah menjadi kepingan-kepingan. Entahkah ini merupakan suatu hal yang ringkih ataukah terlalu canggihkah mulut ini menetak dengan ujung mata dua. Menusuk pula ke dalam secara tangkil dan mangkus. Meninggalkan relung yang dalam dan seakan tak berlandas.

Semua hanya kepastian dan hanya kepingan. Mau ke mana semua itu pergi, terbang, dan menghilang tak satu juga pun mampu meretas. Tak satu pun mampu menyunting arah bertiupnya udara itu. Hanya bisa merasakan dan berharap ada yang sanggup menjelaskan.

Pengharapan adalah suatu sikap bertahan untuk setiap orang yang telah memikirkan semua cara. Mereka yang menggantungkan cita-citanya, yakni berharap akan adanya insan yang mampu membuka tabir yang menutup dan menjadi nur dalam kelam yang menyeruak masuk memakan semua yang telah ada.

Ada? Benarkah semuanya ada?

Another buzz term comes in my mind, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). I can simply said it is to describe a cost to have something. You may find its definition in Google. But, the interesting part for me is this is the term we would find in Information Communication Technology (ICT), or some say Information Technology (IT), or we simply say something that computer related.

The word was brought into my head few years ago when Microsoft made a FUD claimed FOSS-based solutions were costly. After the claim, several people try to justify it. I remember there were some even offered frameworks to compute TCO. Many methods even invented and fortunately some real experts defend the FOSS.

But, seriously, how do you compute a TCO of a software? It even doesn't exists. How do you measure bytes inhibiting computer memory?

Interestingly, you can compute it based on the how much other cost reduced and how the gain increased after the use of a software. In other words, TCO of a software is determined how well you can performs.

Now, let's take a deep moment and calculate how FOSS will gain a benefit for you.

There are some key benefits of using FOSS:
  1. Avoid vendor locking, open for improvements.
  2. Low cost solution with high results.
  3. Education which read as "investment".

Now, some common myth arouse to point FOSS in the wrong direction of TCO:
  1. Legal matters that FOSS may break. Well, never until now we see any of those infringement arouse and won the case. Instead, we saw some FOSS software fight against some proprietary developer that against FOSS license, e.g. MPlayer against KISS which resulted KISS open their player source.
  2. FOSS is cheap. No, FOSS is not cheap. It needs some funds and supports. Every community based project would find themselves in trouble without proper support. They needed to be funded. Implementation cost of a FOSS also is not cheap. Often, FOSS needed a lot of work to be socialized to an organization. So, if you are a company based on quarter reports as measurements of success. FOSS is failing behind those proprietary solution. But,
  3. FOSS is expensive is a FUD. If you are an annual analyst and you are aware of long run benefits, then FOSS may you find as cheap as candy. The cost that make FOSS is expensive is the cost to setup FOSS as one of the infrastructure. Many FOSS project is having difficulty to have proper documentation and support. Although, this is not true for stable and big FOSS projects. Once you have in the pace with any FOSS, you would benefits by many improvements such as daily updates and customization enhancement.
Actually there are some missing points that seems lost that people often see FOSS in a wrong view.
  1. FOSS is a community based project and the project often is a one man show. So, expects of discontinuation of a project when the project leader leave. Or, expect to have discrete approach when new developers come. Note that this is not true for long, stable, and established projects.
  2. FOSS is a community based project and is a products of hackers alter ego. So, you cannot push a community for support nor banging them for not giving you information that you need.
  3. FOSS is a community based project and it's not fair if you just take benefit and not contribute. For the sake continuation of a project, community need to be supported. Either cheered with funds, some code, or just a name. Remember, every ego must be supported.
  4. FOSS is not proprietary.
If you see the four points, it also reveal another good fact: community based project. You could see this and oppose it. Or, you could see this as flock of human resources. Moreover, you could see this as an open standard and see how many amazing improvements. Luckily, you could study your market there.

For short summarize, I can conclude you this:
  1. FOSS is a long run investment.
  2. FOSS is a community based project.
It would impact you as a company or as a part of a vast community. In the end, FOSS would find itself beneficial to you. So, if you would like to total the ownership cost of a FOSS project, you must justified it with some view:
  1. Business view: How this benefits your business.
  2. Social view: How this benefits your worker and your company survival.
  3. Investment view: How this product will support your sustainability.
  4. Warfare: How this would make you own a serious deal of market or make you a top notch.
So, yeah, basically you could count TCO with the common approach you learn in business school.
IGOS is a buzz term that culminating into many forms here in Indonesia. First, the term was initiated to state an act of the emerging recognition over Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Later, it was taken into a form of GNU/Linux distribution (distro) based on Fedora, or community edition of Redhat. I remembered between the transformation, the IGOS distro was introduced as Sun Desktop derivative. It was displayed in one of the counter in one of IGOS early show where Microsoft's counter was the popular and the most visited. (Too bad I didn't won the XBOX.:()

There are many difficulties that Indonesia facing during the time, including the dual stance of the government toward the use of FOSS. I remembered that Ministry of Communication and Information (Departemen Kementerian Komunikasi dan Informatika/ Depkominfo) really doing something about the IGOS movement. At the time, they were bond not to the FOSS side. But, they were using an underground move by deploying IGOS for their own internal use. At the time, IGOS seems lost its cause.

Luckily the cataclysm of FOSS usage in the world, the wide spread Ubuntu, got into Indonesia. I remembered when Mark himself came into Indonesia, speaking in an event held by the Depkominfo. To me, it was like the multimillionaire himself made a note that Indonesia should be dancing in freeness and he introduced Indonesian into that revolutionary.

I remembered what Mark said that day, what I was trying to convinced everyone around me about the emerging new business model: "The software is free but the service is ours"

Yeah, that was the reason why I choose the GNU/Linux and the FOSS as my main research. The new business model that now is widely adopted by IBM, SUN Microsystem, and even recently Microsoft. Mark's words seems explained every aspect of the vague business model. I thank him for the sentence really describing what at the time was to me should be explained in many paragraphs.

The continuation of the meeting is to me is described as the strong wind of FOSS movement. After the meeting, the Indonesian gathered into a small community, which in the end would became the Ubuntu-id.

I remembered back then in 2005, where Debian Conference II held in University of Indonesia, Andi Dharmawan and Ananda Putra members of that community Indonesian Ubuntu (lately bestowed as Ubuntu-id) talked in the show. I remembered back there, we even invited Stallman to talk via Video Conference. To bad, when D-Day, we didn't manage to establish a connection with Stallman so we just watched his video.

The fast growing Ubuntu in the world also affected the FOSS community in Indonesia. As far as I remember, Ubuntu was the first and the only one GNU/Linux distribution that officially accepted Indonesian community as one of their part. Canonical, the company that found and actively manage Ubuntu, even marked the official status by supporting "id" domain of Ubuntu.

Not only the official Ubuntu, the Indonesian Ubuntu community also have their own site and having google mailing list as their discussion room.

The FOSS movement were not by the Ubuntu alone. Indonesian GNU/Linux Users community (Komunitas Pengguna Linux Indonesia/KPLI) also had the contribution by creating series of event for introducing GNU/Linux to people. It was by them the informal meeting known as Kopi Darat/Kopdar became popular. KPLI itself is not an organization, they are to me like community cells.

One important note also is the media that to me successfully introduced FOSS, the InfoLINUX magazine. InfoLINUX magazine has attracted many of its new readers by giving them bonus CD contained with FOSS. They even regularly introduced many new distro. I remembered the publisher of InfoLINUX was so kind that they regularly sponsored many FOSS events.

Meanwhile, IGOS that had morphed into a distro seems like stuck in the middle of nowhere. The IGOS distribution in my point a view is seems like a dead project. Their community wasn't there to support them. Their site is almost functioning. But, the fatal thing about them is the close development they took. This is definitely not a good thing about FOSS.

I have found many exotic distros, including distros from Indonesia. They seems not well maintained and stuck somewhere and lost their cause. This is because of the inexperience of developers about the new trend. FOSS is about openness and the continued support of community. This is understandable for some distros, because they weren't hosted anywhere and never have enough fund. Unfortunately, IGOS distro have the same result while they were supported.

Now, with the lost cause of IGOS, the Depkominfo seems eager wants to put the term into the right definition, a movement. With the help of Ubuntu-id community, they want to revive the long lost BlankOn, which named BlankOn 2. It was first based on RedHat, later on as Fedora. But now, it move its core into Ubuntu-based. This BlankOn 2 project will be a new history of creating Indonesian distro. Well, this is an ongoing project and the process is in the way to establish the servers.

A note about Indonesian distro, the Kuliax distro should also have proper attention. This distro, afaik, has gained international attention. This Knoppix-based distribution have a future and I think it has interesting concept that differ from Ubuntu's Edubuntu.

To conclude, if anyone from Indonesian FOSS read this, there are things that I would like to remind you:
1. FOSS is about openness, so have your community involved, make them own.
2. FOSS is about community, create a warm community and make them own.
3. FOSS is about contribution, gives the community a chance to contribute, make them own.

And if you were a business man, well, I know some formula about making FOSS to generate venues. But, that is beyond my intention. Believe me, I was trying to convinced many people back in 2004/2005 about the emerging market. I wished we could be one of the pioneer that time. Too late, now we just one of the follower. Well, on second thought, I think we are not that late.

Btw, who am I to judge? I just watched them. Many things not covered in here, like the history of KPLI (which existed way before the term IGOS mentioned). Many movements such like the events from Indonesian universities and KPLI inviting open source people and converting people to FOSS. I just happened watched only few events. But, I just try to start my story from when the government have the term IGOS proclaimed.

Anyway, I just only a watcher, if there were something noticeable happened in IGOS, which my attention lack for, feel free to comment.

2. Sorrow. (e.g. losses, love betrayal, missing life)

The increasing number of those themes have impacted the way we live. If you realize, we have weakened our senses so that we ourselves are driven into a deep frustration or we can say, our sorrow can be easily triggered.

Well, we are the instant generation, we are driven instantly into deep frustration. What a fruit of technology.

Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

There were a saying that just passed in my mind:

"The world is changing because of human. But can humanity adapt to its change?"
